New Bedford – Steven F. Mendes, age 60 of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday July 26, 2015 at home with his family at his side. He was the son of the late Beatrice (Gonsalves) and Frank Mendes. A lifelong resident of this area, Mr. Mendes was a Maintenance Technician for Poah Incorporated. In his free time, he loved gardening and fishing. He was an excellent guitar player and grew up in the West End of New Bedford. Steven was a proud graduate of New Bedford High School class of 1974.
His family includes his loving soulmate Sheila Chumack of New Bedford; 6 chidren: Stephen Mendes of New Bedford, Leah Christy of New Hampshire, Areathea Mendes of New Bedford, Janella Irizarry of New Hampshire, Joshua S. Mendes and Simone Mendes both of New Bedford; 7 siblings: Wayne ( Bob) Mendes of New Bedford, Janice Mendes of New Bedford,Ronald Mendes of New Bedford, Dennis Mendes of New Bedford, Frank Mendes of Atlanta Georgia, Lynette Mendes of New Bedford and the Late Faith (Mendes ) Williams of Kissimmee Florida as well as 14 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. His funeral will begin on Friday at 10:00 A.M. in the funeral home with a Religious Service to start at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, MA.
