George H. Levesque

George H. Levesque, 80 a resident of Brooksby Village and former resident of Salem, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Continuing Care at Brooksby Village following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Mary R. (Desilets) Levesque.

Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Amanda M. (Dionne) Levesque. He was a graduate of Salem High and was a member of the SHS football team. As a young man he first worked for the former Fontaine’s Market prior to his military service. George was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, and served in Germany with the Army. Following his tour of duty he returned to Salem and for many years worked as a meat cutter for Fontaine’s Market and eventually became the manager of the meat department. With the closing of the store in 1972, he began working for Stop & Shop in Peabody in the same capacity and later transferred to the Vinnin Square store from which he eventually retired.

George was a very generous and kind man. He was devoted to his large family and maintained a very special relationship with his nieces and nephews. He served as Chairman on the Salem Board of Health and was Chairman of the American Red Cross Blood Drive for both the Salem Chapter and the North Shore Region. From a young age, George was extremely active in Ste. Anne Parish. In his youth he played baseball for the parish league and later became president of the CYO, the Athletic Club and the parish Blood Drive. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veragua Council 76.

He is survived by four sisters, Anita Murtagh and her husband John of Peabody, Jacqueline Caron and her husband Robert of Danvers, Claudette Thibault and her husband Lionel ‘Spike’ and Phyllis Meaney and her husband Peter all of Salem, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Mary, he was predeceased by his brother Richard and sisters Lorraine Tondreault, Irene Levesque, Pauline Dube and Patricia Murtagh.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Route 114 / 1-A] Salem on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 9:00 A.M. to be followed by his funeral mass in Ste. Anne Church, 290 Jefferson Ave., Salem at 10:00 A.M. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
