Obituary

Mrs. Helen K. (Mitton) Howell, age 96, of Taunton, died July 16, 2015 at Marian Manor in Taunton. Born in Sackville, New Brunswick, Mrs. Howell was the wife of the late Eugene G. Howell and daughter of the late Hazen and Mary (McFee) Mitton.
She moved to Taunton in 1952 where she raised a family at their Worcester Street home. She is survived by her two daughters and a son, Linda Whitlow of Largo, FL. and her spouse, Tom, Nancy Winn of Noble, OK and her spouse, Arthur, and William Howell of Little Compton, RI and his spouse, Kathleen. She is survived by her brother Gerald Mitton and his wife, Edna, and her sister-in-law, Adrianne Mitton of Taunton. She was also the sister of Roy Mitton, Leslie Mitton, Lawrence Mitton, Frederick Wyatt, Rose (Cassie) Bernath, Charlie Wyatt and Herbert Wyatt, who predeceased her.
An active member of the Taunton Women’s Club, Mrs. Howell held several leadership positions. She most enjoyed her time as head of the Education Committee where she spent many hours selecting the recipients of the Women’s Club’s scholarships. Unable to attend college herself due to the Depression, Helen saw that all her children pursued higher education and always sought to help others achieve the goal denied to her. Mrs. Howell was interested in painting and crafts, especially Christmas decorations of high quality that could be called works of folk art and are cherished by her children. Mrs. Howell was also an avid bowler and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Helen had a wonderful sense of humor; always willing to go along with a gag or wear a silly costume if it would bring a smile.
In addition to the Taunton Women’s Club, Helen was an active member of the Taunton Chapter of the Red Hat Society. The club’s mantra was “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me” which she happily embraced.
Mrs. Howell will be missed by her family and friends including her 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
