Gilbert Francis Jones passed away on July 4, 2015 in Ventura, CA from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was born in Oceanside, CA on March 21, 1928 to Joseph Calasanetius Jones and Thelma Hester Braveman Kitterman. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948.
Gilbert married Dorothy Lavona Sloss Eberley on September 18, 1949 in Las Vegas, NV. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the LDS St. George Temple on June 5, 1954. Together Gil and Dorothy reared seven sons in the greater Los Angeles area. He spent his retirement years in Las Vegas, NV and Victorville, CA.
After Dorothy passed away in 2006, Gilbert married and was sealed to long-time family friend, Barbara Joy Smith McCall Walsh, on September 29, 2007, in the LDS Los Angeles Temple. They made their home in Ventura, CA.
Gil had a remarkable sense of humor, a rich baritone voice, and a love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a convert to the LDS faith. As an active member of the church, he served in various callings including several years as the bishop of the Agoura Ward. He was known for his jokes, his singing, and as a loving father who worked a second job as a tax preparer to support his seven sons. With Dorothy, he served three missions including one and a half years at the LDS Temple in Littleton, CO. Gil was known as a consummate genealogist and indexing specialist for the LDS church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Calasanz Joseph Jones. He is survived by his devoted wife Joy of 8 years, his brother (Robert Morris Jones), his seven sons (Christopher, Scott, Mark, Reagan, Tracy, Guy, Lance) and their spouses, Joy’s two sons and daughter (Kim McCall, Greg McCall, Laurie McCall) and their spouses, 45 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 11, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 10400 Henderson Road, Ventura, CA 93004. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Interment at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311. Arrangements under the direction of the JOSEPH P.
