Obituary

DARTMOUTH — Adelaide Cole Heyniger Griswold of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, died June 11, 2015.
Born in 1923, she was the daughter of Glen Walker Cole and Eleanor Houghton Cole of Corning, New York. Her grandfather, Alanson B. Houghton, was the American Ambassador to England and Germany, and her uncle, Amory Houghton, was Ambassador to France. Her father was president of Corning Glass Works during World War II.
A graduate of Foxcroft School, she attended Vassar College for two years and then went to work for the Navy League in New York City. In 1946, she married Frank Kingsbury Heyniger of Corning and they spent the next twenty-four years at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where they lived on campus and were active in school life.
Mr. Heyniger died in 1970 and she married the Reverend Brendan Griswold in 1974 and moved to Buffalo,NY. There she became president of The Women of St. Paul's Cathedral and a member of the board of the Philharmonic Orchestra. Always community-minded, her special interests were Head Start, Caanan House (a half-way house for women prisoners), Hospice, and St. Aidan's Chapel in South Dartmouth, MA.
Reverend Griswold predeceased her in 2010. She is also predeceased by her son, Cole Heyniger. She is survived by a daughter, Susan H. Cole of California and by two step-children, Dr. Kim Griswold of Buffalo and Geoffrey Griswold of Atlanta. There are six grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 am on July 18th, 2015, at St Aiden's Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Aidan's Chapel, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
