Obituary

Daniel C. Chaves, age 81, of Brockton, died peacefully June 16, 2015 at Signature Healthcare-Brockton Hospital. Daniel was the loving husband for 59 years of Helena F. (DaCosta) Chaves. Born, raised and educated in Santa Maria, Azores, he was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Cabral) Chaves. Daniel moved from the Azores to Canada in 1967 and had been a resident of Brockton since 1969. While living in Santa Maria, he was a Lighthouse Keeper, and for many years worked locally for General Dynamics in Quincy and Southeastern Construction in Avon, retiring in 1996. He was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Club in Bridgewater. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
In addition to his wife, Daniel is survived by two sons Valdemar and his wife Hue of Bridgewater and Vasco and his wife Kelli of Lakeville; three grandchildren Veldemar Chaves, Jr. and Courtney and Casey Chaves; a brother David Chaves; two sisters Armanda Branco and Maria DeMoura and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Valder Chaves and brother of the late Jose, Adelina and Maria Chaves.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Friday 4-8pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Saturday at 8am for a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery.
