Laconia-----Laura Michaelis, the youngest sibling of Kathy Michaelis (John Metro), Susan Michaelis Gunther (Bob Gunther), Maryanne Michaelis, William Michaelis, and Brian Michaelis (Kim Foss), passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 surrounded by her family.
Born in Smithtown, New York on December 20, 1969 – a Christmas gift – to the late Gertrude (Gerry) and the late William Michaelis, Laura moved to New Hampshire in June, 1998. She lived in Laconia, worked at New Beginnings in Laconia, and volunteered at a food pantry in Franklin and the Gilford Public Library. Watching movies and listening to music in her apartment, going out for dinner, mini golf, and tenpin bowling were favorite pastimes. Over the past several years, Laura was a member of The Down Syndrome Team, the Winnipesaukee Warriors Special Olympics team, testified before New Hampshire House and Senate committees on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities, and voted.
Family was important to Laura. She loved her nephew Jarrad Gunther, his wife Sarah Gunther, and their daughters, Morgan and Maggie. It was heartwarming to see Laura cuddling with and singing to the girls. Every Thanksgiving, Laura looked forward to the tradition of playing Uno with everyone, especially her nephews Ben and Russ Foss-Michaelis. Laura also leaves behind a niece, Lisa Carrier of Washington, and a nephew, Tim Cassel of Nevada.
Laura’s vibrant smile, quick wit, generosity, and joy will be remembered. A celebration of Laura’s life will be held for family and friends at The Beane Center, Blueberry Lane, Laconia on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Ladies: wear a favorite dress, a string of pearls if you have one, and pin up your hair, all things Laura did when she went out for a special occasion.
Rather than flowers, memorial contributions to New Beginnings, 832 North Main Street, Laconia, or Lakes Region Community Services, 719 North Main Street, Laconia are preferred.
