Obituary

New Bedford – Manuel “Curruca” Silva, age 81, died, peacefully, on Saturday June 6, 2015 at Sacred Heart Home.
Manuel is survived by his wife, Rosa Arvelo Silva, his son João Manuel DaSilva and his wife, Leslie; grandchildren: Jesley Teixeira, Nyle DaSilva and Luke DaSilva. He also leaves behind a sister Maria Odete Oliveira and a number of nieces and nephews in New Bedford, Argentina and Canada. He is predeceased by his daughter, Ivone Maria Pereira DaSilva.
Manuel spent his first 14 years in Cova Gala, Portugal before he started his life long career as a Commercial Fisherman. Portugal, New Finland, Argentina and both coasts of the United States he traveled doing what he loved.
In New Bedford, he has been a big part of the fishing community. He fished for many years and every year he took part in the Working Water Front Festival with his hobby of building by hand models of the boats of the New Bedford fleet. He did so until he was incapable due to Alzheimer’s Disease.
The family would like to thank the staff on St. Michael's Unit of Sacred Heart Home for their wonderful care.
Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday June 9 from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. with a service to begin at 12:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
