Obituary

Margaret “Peggy’’Fortune died on May 23, 2015, after a brief illness, at Cambridge Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Peggy was born on November 10, 1956 in New York City, the daughter of John and Lottie Fortune. She grew up in Hamburg, New York, graduated from Hamburg High School and later moved,with her parents,to Massachusetts.

Peggy was born with challenges that continued throughout her life. She managed several chronic health conditions with great courage and determination, and was very proud of her ability to live independently. She appreciated the support, encouragement and guidance she received over the years.

Peggy loved her Cambridge neighborhood. She lived at the Lyndon B. Johnson Apartments on Erie Street where she enjoyed hosting her family’s annual Christmas party. Peggy was a faithful member of the Cambridgeport Baptist Church where she was Baptized in 2007.She loved her church and was uplifted by the music, scripture and fellowship there.

Peggy loved her family. She was so proud of her niece and nephews and their partners, and delighted in planning special celebrations for them. She had a great sense of humor. She loved singing along to John Denver songs on road trips to visit her parents in Maine. She loved all animals, but especially dogs.
She had a great capacity for friendship and was never shy about expressing her love to family and friends. Peggy was kind-heartedherself and was always deeply appreciative of the many kindnesses bestowed upon her. She inspired her family and friends with her deep faith, clarity in knowing what she wanted and her welcoming spirit.
Peggy is survived by her parents John and Lottie of Wells Maine; her sisters Aileen Fortune (and husband DavidAgan) of Wells, Mary Fortune of North Easton Mass; her nephews Daniel Finn of Cambridge and John Fortune Agan of Washington DC, her niece Clare Fortune-Agan of Exeter NH, their respective partners Jill Ferreira, KimberlyAgan, and Kyle Lad; and former brother-in-law Joseph Finn of Amesbury Mass.

A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Cambridgeport Baptist Church at 459 Putnam Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139.
A brunch reception will follow the service. On street parking in any legal ‘resident only’ spot will be permitted. A special parking waiver will be in effect during the service and reception.

During her final illness, she and her entire family were supported with great kindness by the staff of Cambridge Hospital, the Cambridge Elder Service Plan and her church community.In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Peggy’s memory to the Cambridgeport Baptist Church, to support the Harvest Food Pantry or the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA)Foundation to support the Elder Service Plan (CHA Foundation, 1493 Cambridge St, Cambridge MA 02139).
