McAndrews, Margaret (Stier), a resident of Needham since 2003, died peacefully Saturday, May 16, 2015. She was born in Cincinnati, OH on June 8, 1925, and graduated from Mount St. Joseph College in 1947. She married Jack McAndrews, a career DuPont executive, in 1952. She and Jack raised their family over the next 28 years, moving frequently until settling in Westport, CT for 15 years. They retired to Pebble Beach CA, which they enjoyed greatly until Jack passed away in 1999.
Margaret was active in the Catholic Church and volunteered for her children’s schools and local charities. She enjoyed reading, the opera, politics and her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She and Jack gifted the John and Margaret McAndrews Professor of Mathematics position at the University of Notre Dame, a history scholarship at St. Norbert College and a scholarship at Fairfield College Preparatory School in Fairfield, CT. During her husband's professional career, she was a constant companion and enthusiastic supporter. They loved to travel, with a special fondness for European destinations. At North Hill in Needham, Margaret was a dedicated member of the Library and Health Care committees and an avid Boston sports fan. She is survived by two sisters, Julie Scheurmann and Sister Jane Stier, O.S.U.; a brother, Kent Stier; a daughter, Mary Ellen McAndrews and her husband Ted Stehle; and four sons: Larry and his wife Nelly; Kevin and his wife Julie; Brian and his wife Elise; and Chris and his wife Tamara. Survivors also include eleven grandchildren: Matthew, Michael, Jack, Benjamin, Corinne, Lauren, Kyle, Claire, Megan, Ryan and Amanda.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Needham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur, 701 E. Columbia Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45215.
