Obituary

Ian G. McWilliams, 80, of Medford, formerly of Arlington, died at Mt. Auburn Hospital on May 16, 2015. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to Michael and Marie (Maginnis) McWilliams. He was the beloved partner of Patricia H. Ryan.

Ian attended St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was employed for many years as a Senior Engineer at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center.

Ian was an avid hobbyist and deeply interested in astronomy, physics, and Celtic history. Throughout his life he immersed himself in projects ranging from perfecting pumpkin-flavored homebrew to tinkering with voice recognition software. At the time of his death he was teaching himself to speak Irish.

Ian was an accomplished athlete. He completed four marathons and competed in numerous triathlons. He enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.

He will be dearly missed.

In addition to Patricia, Ian is survived by his loving children Eoin B. McWilliams of Arlington; Dymphna M. McWilliams and her husband Todd V. Walker of Amherst; Kenneth R. and his wife Diane McWilliams of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Brendan F. McWilliams of Medford. He is survived by his siblings Michael McWilliams of Willingboro, New Jersey; Paula and her husband Thomas Corcoran of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; and Deirdre and her husband Nicholas Piazzola of Linthicum, Maryland. He is survived by his cherished grandchildren Jared, Luke, Sean, Declan, and Kieran; dear great-grandchildren Shannon, Kiera, Elizabeth and Clark; and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by Patricia’s children and her grandchildren Amelia, Quinn, Eleanor, Theo, Daniel, Allison, Peter, Helen, Beatrice, Ruben, Cruz, and Julius. He is also survived by his former spouse Anne R. McWilliams. Ian was the devoted brother of the late Mary McWilliams.

A Memorial Service will be celebrated in honor of Ian’s life on Saturday, June 13, 2015, from 4-7pm at Meadow Brook Golf Club, 292 Grove Street, Reading. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend.
