Obituary

LaFreniere, J. Alfred Born in 1918 in Malden, Massachusetts, the youngest of twelve children, he was a star ice hockey player at Malden Catholic High School, attended business school, then joined the Foreign Service and was sent to Rio de Janeiro, where he decoded, for the Ambassador, the Pearl Harbor message. His 63 year marriage to Marguerite Harris began in Rio in 1943. Al served in the Navy, and was later given Foreign Service assignments in Ireland, the Azores, India, Washington D.C., Portugal, Mozambique and Brasilia. In each country they created a home where they entertained official guests and created deep, life-long friendships. Early in Al's career he was honored with the presentation of the State Department Meritorious Service medal, awarded by the Secretary of State, for outstanding service in Madras. After retiring from the government in 1968, Al worked in Bechtel's Financial Services, then later as a project manager in Abu Dhabi and Basra, Iraq. Al and Marguerite lived for 22 years in Acton, MA, before moving to Mayflower Place on Cape Cod. He loved all sports, especially golf, which he played into his nineties, and had many hobbies. Al is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Service at a later date.
