Webster
Gerard J. Bernier, 88, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Southbridge Rehabilitation Center.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Joan V. (Kostka) Bernier, 3 sons, John G. Bernier and his wife Donna of Sterling, James F. Bernier and his wife Lucy of Webster, and Jay P. Bernier and his wife Kim of Dudley, 6 grandchildren, Michael, Ryan, Matthew, Austin, Cameron and Katherine, and 2 sisters, Gloria Gilbert of Worcester and Dolores Veroneau of Mashpee.
He was born in Webster the son of the late Joseph and Nellie (Bernier) Bernier and lived here all his life.
Gerard graduated from Bartlett High School in Webster, and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, seeing action in Italy and was a Staff Sgt., and was in charge of maintenance and dispatching of military vehicles, and was in charge of 32 enlisted men and 62 vehicles.
He was a former mechanic and driver for the former Direct Line Bus Line, was a school bus driver for the Town of Webster, delivered milk for the former Choiniere Dairy, a mechanic for the former Jesse White Marina, a part-owner of the former Webster Lake Marina until his retirement.
A Director of Hubbard Regional Hospital, a Director of the Webster-Dudley Chamber of Commerce, an organizer and 1st President of the Nipmuc Water ski Club, Beach Director for the 1964 National Water Ski Tournament that was held at Memorial Beach on Webster Lake, Commodore of the Webster Yacht Club, the Snug Harbor Yacht Club and a member of the American Legion Post # 184.
Gerard’s Funeral will be Wednesday, May 20, 2015 with a Mass at 10AM in St. Louis Church, 16 lake St., burial with full Military Honors provide by the Webster-Dudley Veterans’ Council will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm at THE ROBERT J. MILLER FUNERAL HOME and LAKE CHAPEL, 366 School St.
