Edward Metivier, 86, of Annandale, VA, formerly of New Bedford, died Friday May 15, 2015. He was the husband of the late Barbara C. (Gray) Metivier; they were childhood sweethearts and were married for 64 years.
Born in New York City, the son of the late Edward and Mary (Dalton) Metivier, he lived in Dartmouth and New Bedford before relocating to Annandale to reside with his daughter Karen and her family.
Mr. Metivier was retired from UMass Dartmouth as a senior resident engineer.
Active in local politics, he was a candidate for State Representative and served as chairman and member of the New Bedford Airport Commission. He was co chair of Air Fair ‘77 which attracted thousands of spectators to the New Bedford Airport. He also served as co-chair of the New Bedford Bicentennial Commission.
Mr. Metivier was active in the Massachusetts National Guard 211th and 212th Artillery. He was a member of the Richard F. Howland Chapter for many years.
He was an active participant in Sacred Heart Church. A member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, he also was a recipient of the Marian Medal from the Fall River Diocese. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
He is survived by his children, Robert W. Metivier of New Bedford and Karen A. Metivier Carreiro and her husband David of Annandale; four grandchildren, Carolyn Carmody, Brian Metivier, Natalie Carreiro, and Nicholas Carreiro; and several great-grandchildren.
His Funeral will be held on Wednesday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM.
