Obituary

Born on Christmas Day 1929, Joseph Anthony Clinton, Jr., (better known as Tony) was the cherished only child of Jenipher P. (Hood) Clinton and Joseph Anthony Clinton. On May 11, 2015, Tony passed away in Manchester, NH; his loving daughter, Sheila Clinton, was by his side. In spite of significant health challenges in recent years, Tony never complained and always maintained an extraordinary passion for living a full and happy life. Tony was born in Springfield, MA, grew up in Andover, and graduated from Punchard High School in 1947. A graduate of Salem State College, Tony also served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Marysville, CA.

Tony will be remembered for his many fine qualities. He was a very caring father and grandfather, and extraordinarily proud of his grandson, Noah Kai Matthew, age 21. Tony was a great conversationalist and story teller. Among his many interests, Tony loved trains, reading, travelling, dining out, and completing the crossword puzzle every day in the Boston Globe. Tony absolutely loved attending “the Sunday dance” and seeing his many friends each week. He was a true gentleman, a sharp dresser, and very intelligent. Tony loved to reminisce about a trip he took to England with his late wife, Claire (Concannon) Clinton, and his travels to see his daughter and grandson in the US Virgin Islands and, more recently, in California. Tony had a very satisfying career working for US Customs in CT, NY, and Washington, DC. When Claire became very ill Tony retired from Customs to care for her, and returned to working part time for the Lawrence Post Office. As a young man Tony had enjoyed working at the Andover A and P, the Andover Post Office, and visiting Nova Scotia each summer with his mother.

Most importantly, Tony was a man with a wonderful nature. He remained steadfastly positive and was an inspiration to many. He loved encouraging others, most especially his grandson, his daughter and his many dear friends. His beautiful smile lit up the room. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Clinton, of Fairfax, CA, his grandson, Noah Kai Matthew, Berkeley, CA, his dear friend, Marie D’Agita, Lawrence, his many dear friends at the Sunday dance, (Come Alive After Five), the loving families of Mary Harding and Dorothy Connor, both who loved Tony deeply and welcomed him as family, lifelong friend, Bart Stefani, Andover, Gary McDougall, good friend and neighbor in Derry, Andrea Vincente and family, Londonderry, and several dear cousins, in Canada and Pennsylvania. Dad, Grandpa we love you so very much. We miss you terribly, though our pain is lessened knowing that you are in heaven with God, and all those that you loved who have gone before you.
