Obituary



Hebert L. “Herb” Nelson, Jr. age 89 of Whitman, died Sunday May 10, 2015 at West Acres Rehabilitation & Nursing Center after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Grace L. (Murphy) for 64 years. Herb was born and raised in Brockton a son of the late Herbert and Nellie (Bartlett) Nelson and lived in Brockton before moving to Whitman 50 years ago.
A graduate of Brockton High School, Herb served in the US Army as an MP during WW II and had been stationed in England and Germany. He was awarded two battle stars for the Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. Herb retired as a supervisor at the Montello branch of the US Post Office after 40 years of service.
Herb’s true passion in life was collecting antique cars and he treasured his vintage jeep. A member of the South Shore Antique Auto Club, Herb participated in many shows and parades.
Herb will be remembered as a hardworking man dedicated to his wife Grace.
In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mildred, Warren, Kenneth and Richard Nelson, Blanche Stevens and Marion Doyle.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton on Thursday 9-10:30 am with a funeral service at 10:30. Burial in the Mass National Cemetery, Bourne.
