Obituary

Worcester - Evelyn M. (Bender) Vaskas, 86, passed away at Shrewsbury Crossing on April 22, 2015. She was the widow of Edmund J. Vaskas (d. 2005) to whom she was married for 49 years. She leaves her loving family consisting of two sons and three daughters: Peter J. Vaskas, Mary K. Vaskas and her spouse Sandra, Paul D. Vaskas and his spouse Lynn, Martha Vaskas and partner Kat, and Christine Stearns and her spouse Paul; as well as five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Vaskas.

Born in Boston, Evelyn was the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, Ursula (Wilkas) and Anthony Bender. She graduated from Girls' Latin School, Emmanuel College, and earned Masters and PhD degrees from M.I.T., where she was on the Math faculty. She was also a professor of mathematics at Cornell University and Boston College in the 1950's, and taught at Clark University after raising her family. She was an accomplished alto in the Worcester Chorus and St. Joan of Arc Choir for many years, and volunteered at both Hahnemann Hospital and the Worcester Public Library's Greendale branch during her retirement years. Two life-long passions were reading and spending time at the ocean.

The family would like to thank the staffs (past and present) of Shrewsbury Crossings and AseraCare Hospice for their compassionate care of our mother.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25. Calling hour will be held at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street from 8:30-9:45am followed by a 10am Mass at St. Joan of Arc, 570 Lincoln St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AseraCare Hospice Foundation, 27 Midstate Dr., Suite 104, Auburn, MA 01501.
