Ruth C. Vail, 72, of Derry, NH, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at her home. She was born in Somerville, MA on June 8, 1942, a daughter of the late Edward and Ruth (Fidler) Sullivan. Living in Derry since 1977, she was a former resident of Tewksbury, MA for many years. Ruth retired from Shaw’s Supermarket after 28 years where she worked as a bakery manager. She crocheted afghan blankets for local Veterans Hospitals, even sending them to soldiers stationed overseas. Ruth enjoyed gambling and loved to play the nickel and penny slot machines. She also had a great love for her pets.
She is survived by her son, Leonard Vail, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Auburn, NH, three daughters, Debra Arnold and her husband James of North Chelmsford, MA, Ruth Vail of Manchester, NH, Tracy Powers and her husband Mike of Derry, three grandchildren, Brock Baroody, Demarais Bradshaw and Kevin Vail. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Edward Sullivan and his wife Ruth of Dracut, MA, two sisters, Elaine Gottlander and her husband John of Wilmington, MA, Ann Pannesi and her husband Ronnie of Hampstead, NC, her sister-in-law, Nancy Sullivan of Wilmington, MA and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard C. Vail, Sr. in 2002 and by her brother, Kevin Sullivan.
Calling hours will be held Thursday April 23, 2015 from 4 to 8pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10:00am in the funeral home with burial to follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry.
