Obituary

Whitman – William J. Varley, 76, died Wednesday April 15 after a long period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of 23 years to Maureen (Lane) Varley.

Born in Boston and raised in cold water flat, he was the son of the late Linus and Ruth (Lynch) Varley.

William was a proud Veteran of the US Navy, having served from 1957-1960.

Prior to his retirement William had worked as the chief concierge for the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel of Boston and had truly enjoyed going to work each day. For his exemplary service he received the Bill Marriot Award received by only five other employees worldwide, for this he was truly proud.

He was an avid fan of the Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins. In the winter he enjoyed skiing and had the opportunity to ski the Matterhorn in the Alps, during the summer months he loved the oceans of Cape Cod and lobsters of Maine, and loved time spent at Rockport by the sea.

He was a man well-liked by all who knew him and was known by several nicknames including “Mr. V”, “Victor Luv” and “#1”.

He was a great husband and brother as well as a loving father & grandfather, and will be missed by family and friends.

In addition to his wife Maureen he is survived by his sons Bruce Varley and his wife Dawn of Whitman and Joseph Varley and his wife Ginny of PA and his brother Linus Varley of Pembroke. He is also survived by many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a great grandchild. He was predeceased by his sisters Ruth and Gertrude and his brother John.

Family and friends are invited at attend his visiting hours to be held Monday April 20 from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. On Tuesday April 21 a procession will depart from the Chapel at 1:00 PM with a committal service to follow at 2:30 PM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
