Dr. Frank W. Ewald, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Dr. Frank Whaley Ewald, Jr., Associate Chief of Staff for Affiliations and Education at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center, died from pancreatic cancer at his home, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, April 11, 2015, concluding a life of service to his country and fellow veterans.

Dr. Ewald was born May 3, 1945 in the dispensary of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to Captain Frank W. Ewald, Sr. and Anne Oakley Ewald.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, 1973, with a B.A., Cum Laude, Biology, and earned his graduate and professional degree in medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1976. Dr. Ewald served his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and pulmonary fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center.

His military service included; enlisted service to grade E-4 1966-1967, Artillery Officer Candidate School, 1967, Training Officer 1967-1968, John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School 1968, Vietnamese Language School – Fort Bliss, Texas 1968. He served as Combat Assistant Team Leader, 21st Artillery Battalion in Bac Lieu, Vietnam 1968-1969 as a First Lieutenant and promoted to Captain, USAR 1968.

He was named a U.S. Army Health Professions Scholar 1974-1976 and commissioned Captain U.S. Army Medical Corp 1976. Dr. Ewald served as General Medical Officer, U.S. Army Health Clinic, The Pentagon from 1977-1980. He was promoted to Major U.S. Army Reserves 1982 and Lieutenant Colonel 1989.

Dr. Ewald served as Pulmonary Disease Physician at Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon 1984-1987 and began his career at the Charlie Norwood VAMC as Director of Pulmonary Clinic and Outpatient Activities, 1987; Director of Pulmonary Diagnostics, 1988; Medical Director Respiratory Care, 1993; Acting Associate Chief of Staff Research, 2005-2007; and Associate Chief of Staff for Affiliations and Education, 2007 to present. He also served as an Attending Physician for Pulmonary/Critical Care from 1987 to present.

Dr. Ewald served on numerous committees for both the VAMC and GRU throughout his professional career including the Research and Development Committee, Quality Assurance Committee and the Human Assurance Committee (IRB).

Dr. Ewald is survived by his wife Robbie Lewis Ewald of Evans, Georgia. Two sons, Erick Bernard of Grovetown, Georgia, Cutler Bernard of Princeton, New Jersey. Two daughters, Corey Treacy (Jefferson, Lt. J.G. USN) of Grovetown, Georgia and Jennifer Joiner (Randy) of Atlanta, Georgia. A brother, Jack Ewald (Donna) of Bonita Springs, Florida and a sister Kathryn Ewald-Johnson (Evan) of Worthington, Massachusetts.

The funeral service will be Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville, Georgia at a later date.
