Richard K. O’Brien, Sr. of Canton passed away April 5 2015 peacefully at his home in Canton. Born in Boston, he was raised in Misson Hill. He attended Misson Hill Grammar School, St. Mary’s Seminary and graduated from Bridgewater State College class of 1976. Richard joined the Army serving in both the Korean & Vietnam Eras. Dick worked for the Boston Globe for 38 years as a Mailer and a Member of the Teamster's Union Local #1 retiring in 1986. Dick has resided in Canton for over 51 years where he and his wife Mary raised their 10 children. Mr. O'Brien was an active member of the community having been the Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, working most of the Bingos. He coached both the Canton Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball Leagues. Mr. O’Brien sang in the choir at St. John the Evangelist Church, where he also taught CCD, CYO and the Pre-Cana programs for over 20 years. He also served as an Eucharistic Minister. Dick was a member of both the Lions Club and the Canton Police Auxiliary. Dick was a lifelong member of the “Mouse Pack”. Beloved husband of Mary T. (Byrne). Father of Richard K. Jr. and his wife Julee of Taunton, Michael T. and his wife Diane of Norton, Kathleen M. Hoke and her husband Steve of Brandon, FL, John F. and his wife Amy of W. Roxbury, Thomas M. of Canton, Maria C. of Norton, James M. and his wife Maureen of Hudson, JoAnne Randlett and her husband Mark of Franklin, Christine M. Dyckman and her husband David of Norton and Matthew A. of Canton. Brother of Joan O’Brien of Canton, Helen Baril and her husband Daniel of Canton and the late Maurice “Sonny” O’Brien. Proud papa of 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Friday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Saturday morning at 10:00. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. Army Veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam Era. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the St. John School Foundation Box 604 Canton, MA 02021 or to St. John the Evangelist Church Choir 700 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021.
