TEWKSBURY - Barbara M. (McCann) Mathers, age 88 a devoted mother and grandmother, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family Tuesday morning, March 31. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard G. Mathers, who died in 2007.
She was born in Lawrence, March 3, 1927, one of three children of the late Alexander and Zarilda (Goupil) McCann, and was raised in Lawrence, where she had graduated from St. Anne’s High School. She moved to Canada, where she married her late husband, but returned to Methuen and finally Tewksbury in the year 2000.
She was employed as a skein winder at Malden Mills in Lawrence.
Barbara was a former Deaconess at the Forest Street Union Church in Methuen, and was an active member of the parish along with her husband, who had also served as a Deacon.
She was remembered as having devoted her life to God and her family.
She leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith M. Thurn and her husband Michael of Cleveland, Ohio, and Joan E. Canty and her husband Richard of Tewksbury; a brother, Robert T. McCann of Methuen; four grandchildren, Katie Hutichson of OH, Amanda H. Thurn of NC, Brian Canty of Tewksbury, and Jillian Coppola of Lowell; six great grandchildren, Dylan, Jacob, Emily, Nicholas, Jocelyn, and Julia; and was preceded in death by her brother, Gilbert A. McCann.
Visiting hours Thursday, April 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her funeral will begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Street Union Church, 15 Forest St., Methuen, MA 01844.
