Dorothy Ann Small
Mrs. Dorothy Ann Small (nee Needham), age 87, of Amelia Island, FL passed away Monday afternoon, March 30, 2015 at the Warner Center (Hospice facility) near her home at Amelia Island Plantation. Born in Old Town, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence E. and Catherine Needham. Mrs. Small (Dotty) had attended the University of Maine and was graduated from the Maine General Hospital, Portland with an RN degree in 1950. She also attended Boston College and Boston University and was employed as a head nurse on the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital. Dotty also worked with her late husband, Alan, who was a builder and developer of residential homes on Cape Cod. Her presence was essential in starting their home building business during their early married years. They were responsible for many sought-after homes in the towns of Barnstable and Centerville on Cape Cod. Dotty enjoyed the social life, especially golfing, at Oyster Harbors in Cape Cod and at Amelia Island. Dotty and Alan have been Amelia Island residents since 1981. Preceding Dotty in death are her husband of 56 years, Alan (died July 16, 2011), her sisters Margaret (Tissy) Needham and Mary Tackaberry, and her nephew Edward Tackaberry. She leaves behind special family members, Rachel Coll (Patrick) and their children Mac and Liam Coll, and Richard Maguire (Johanna) and their children Jack and Nina Maguire. Dotty also leaves behind her niece and nephews: Robert Tackaberry, Michael (Sharon) Tackaberry and their daughter Angie, Amy Tackaberry (Edward deceased) and their children Matthew and Tracy, and Jane (Edward) Shewman and their children Sean and Cole. Mrs. Small's family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 3, 2015 at Green Pine Funeral Home at 96281 Green Pine Rd., Yulee, Florida. A graveside service will be held at Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit, Ma at 11:00 am on Saturday April 11, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
