Petra Mendez, 79, of Sharon, went to heaven on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Born in Puerto Rico, she resided in Massachusetts for many years moving to Dorchester in 1967 prior to her final move to Sharon in 2009. She was a long time companion to the late Thomas Sutherland. She retired from University Hospital as a nurse’s aide, where she was known to spend her lunch time visiting her patients.She was referred to as “Mami” not only by her children but by all of the neighborhood kids as she enjoyed being a caregiver. Petra would incorporate her love of music and dancing into her house cleaning and exceptional cooking or just having fun with family, friends and her beloved dogs. She was handy around the house and also enjoyed gardening, taking long walks, going to the movies and reading educational books. She is survived by her children, Marta Mendez; Margarita Mendez; Miriam Rodriguez and her husband David; Minerva Smith and her husband Calvin; Marcos Mendez; Melvin Mendez and his wife Jamie; and Magdalena Jones and her husband Bennie. She was the mother of the late Sonia Fonseca. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings, Natividad Pagan, Julio Rivera, Jose Rivera, Ramon Rivera, and Eloise Cruz. She was the late sister of Felicita Pagan Diaz. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Brady & Fallon funeral home, 10 Tower St (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Sunday, March 22 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at The Sacred Heart Church 169 Cummins Highway Roslindale on Monday at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. | ||||
