Obituary

Ruth Calhoun Spicer, 91, of Ocilla, died Thursday, February 26, 2015, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Monday, March 2, 2015, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Ocilla, with Elder Paul Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Brushy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Sunday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.

Mrs. Spicer was born November 20, 1923, in Pitts, Georgia, to the late Richard & Lula Catherine Smith Calhoun. She was a graduate of Wilcox County High School. She worked as assistant manager for the Irwin County Canning Plant and helped teach migrant children in the Irwin County school system. She worked alongside her husband in the Tax Collector’s Office for several years as well. Mrs. Spicer’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, dancing, and attending the Senior Citizen’s Center. She was a member of the former Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children: Mary Catherine Rowe of Ocilla, Carolyn Waller of Fitzgerald, and Melvin Cleon Spicer and his wife, Debi of South Hampton, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren: Rachel & Ricky Newton, Dale & Todd Ricks, Charles & Jill Rowe, Michael & Carol Waller, Angela Smith, Tony & Kim Waller, Samantha Spicer, and Daniel Spicer; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Beauford Calhoun of Cordele; and three sisters: Juliette Butler of Rochelle, Lorelle Owens of Cochran, and Pansy Register of Newton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Cleo Spicer; an infant daughter; four brothers: Doc Calhoun, Hubert Calhoun, Vernon Calhoun, and Howard Calhoun; and one sister, Ruby Calhoun.
