Obituary

Fall River, MA – Ethel G. (Bartel) Bindon passed away peacefully at St. Anne’s Hospital at the age of 106 on February 5. She was born in Taunton, daughter of the late Adolph Bartel and Ethel (Cahoon) Bartel. She was wife of the late Albert W. J. Bindon who predeceased her in 1954. The mother of eight children, she is survived by Martha McGovern of Taunton, Ethel Gurn (William) of Attleboro, Nancy Goulart (John) of Dighton, Albert W. J., Jr., (Linda) of Lakeville, and Olive “Polly” Leroy (Patrick) of Middleboro, daughters-in-law Vera of El Paso, TX, Norene, of Lakeville, son-in-law, Francis Rose of Berkley, and two nieces, a nephew and many cousins. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Edith A. Rose of Berkley, and sons James A. of El Paso, and Carl E. of Lakeville, son-in-law James A. McGovern of Taunton and grandson Carl E. Bindon, Jr. of Lakeville, by her twin sister, Elsie Bartel, sisters Martha Bartel of Taunton, Mildred Rusconi of Attleboro, Marion DeSilvia of San Diego, CA and her brother, Carl A. Bartel of Newton Centre. She was educated in Taunton schools and moved to Berkley in 1928. In 2009 she was recognized as the oldest resident of Berkley and received citations from the MA Senate and House of Representatives. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed knitting afghans for her grandchildren, travel, and flower gardening. She was an avid reader and shared her love of mysteries ranging from books by Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew Series) to Agatha Christie. She is the grandmother of 21, great grandmother of 17 and great, great grandmother of 12. She and her husband operated a small farm that grew strawberries, several varieties of winter squash, muskmelons and potatoes along with smaller crops for personal use. She was a great cook and for many years prepared and sold steamed English plum puddings at Christmas. She was a member of the Myricks Methodist Church in Berkley. Her wake will be on Wednesday, February 11, from 5 – 7 p.m. followed by funeral services on Thursday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the O’Keefe – Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton. Interment will be at the Westville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berkley Ambulance Fund, North Main St., Berkley, MA, 02779; Clifton Residents’ Activities Fund, 500 Wilbur Ave., Somerset, MA, 02725; Myricks Methodist Church, Myricks St., Berkley, MA 02779; or a charity of your choice.
