New Bedford – Mary P. Sylvia, age 96 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Hathaway Manor. She was the loving wife of the late Manuel Sylvia and the daughter of the late Grace (Mendez) and Antone Luiz.
Mrs. Sylvia was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all her life. She worked as a stitcher in local garment factories for many years before her retirement.
Her family includes her daughter: Eileen Bettencourt, of New Bedford; 3 siblings: Adeline DeSousa, Alice Medeiros both of New Bedford and Antone Luiz of Acushnet; She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Connie Figuerido, Frank, Joe,and Alvaro Luiz.
Her funeral will be Friday beginning in the funeral home at 9 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. James Church at 10 A.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5-7 P.M.
