Obituary

William (Bill) Cargill, Jr., Captain – US Army Retired, 96, of Winthrop, MA passed away on January 1, 2015, at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. Born in Scotland, his family immigrated to the United States. In 1940 Bill joined the Army. He served with the 45th Infantry Division and the 3rd Infantry Division in Africa, Sicily, Italy, southern France and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Bronze Star among other distinguished medals. After WW II, Bill returned to the United States and was posted to New Hampshire, New Jersey, Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, and finally to Ft. Banks in Winthrop. Following his military service, Bill worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at Logan Airport before retiring. Bill loved gardening, especially tending to his beautiful rose bushes. His favorite pastime was walking Winthrop Beach regardless of the seasons accompanied by his beloved dogs. In 1995, his wife, Sigrid (Martinson), and in 2005, his wife, Dorothy (Pelland) passed away. His sister, Bessie, of Ormand Beach, FL, also predeceased him. He is survived by his children, William (Waldo) Cargill III and his wife, Anne, of Winthrop, Eric Cargill and his wife, Sheila, of York, ME, Gale Picone and her husband, Sal, of Winthrop, and Linda Cargill and her husband, Charles Iappini, also of Winthrop; his stepchildren Bobby Pelland, Dorothy Gillen and Jane Manchester; his sister, Margaret Solomon, brother, David Cargill, both of Lawrence, MA, and his sister, Hilda Clements of Kingston, NH, as well as his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home at 210 Winthrop Street, Winthrop, MA. Funeral Services for Bill will be from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited. Bill will be laid to rest at the Winthrop Belle Isle Cemetery, 100 Kennedy Drive, Winthrop, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s honor may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675, or a charity of your choice.
