Gerald W. MacLean age 79 of Canton, A former edition editor for The Patriot Ledger, died December 30, 2014. Mr. MacLean worked 30 years for the Ledger from 1967 to 1997. He started at the newspaper as Assistant West Edition editor at the Norwood office and later was West Edition Editor, assistant City editor in Quincy. He previously was suburban editor at the Meriden Conn. Journal and earlier was a reporter for the Bethlehem, PA Globe Times and the Medford, Ma Mercury. Mr. MacLean served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina at the Special Warfare Center where he was a communication specialist in psychological warfare. He was born in Inverness, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia Canada and came to the United after his parents died when he was two years old. He was raised in Somerville, MA and was a 1952 graduate of Somerville High School. He was a 1956 graduate of the Boston University School of Journalism. He was a resident of Canton since 1967 and was head usher and a deacon at the United Church of Christ in Canton. Mr. MacLean was a charter member of the Norwood Kiwanis Club and the Southington Conn. Kiwanis Club. He was married for 57 years to Beverly Ann (Matheson) MacLean. He was a fan of all Boston sports teams, particularly the Bruins. He was a fan of Boston University hockey and a season ticket holder for many years, he was a member of the BU Friends of Hockey. Beloved husband of the late Beverly Ann (Matheson). Loving father of Heather Green & her husband Paul of Canton. Cherished grandfather of Ryan & Shannon Green of Canton. He also survived by his son Donald of Bridgewater, five additional grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service is being planned.
