Charles M. "Charlie" Akins, Sr.

MASHPEE: Charles M. “Charlie” Akins, Sr., 80, died peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Falmouth Hospital following a brief period of declining health.
He was born in Brighton on January 9, 1934 the son of the late James P. Akins, Sr. and Madeline M. (O’Neil) Akins.
Charlie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Shirley A. (Pintabona) Akins of Mashpee formerly of Wayland. Beloved father of Charles M. “Chuck” Akins, Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen of Medway, Richard M. “Dick” Akins and his wife Ann of Mont Vernon, NH and the late Thomas J. “Tommy” Akins who died on October 3, 2006. Cherished grandfather of Kellie Akins, Laura Akins, Jennifer Akins, Colleen Akins, Rebecca Akins, Meredith Akins, Daniel Akins and Richard Akins. Brother of Mary M. Akins of West Dennis and the late James P. “Spike” Akins. Brother-in-law of Philip Pintabona and his wife Grace of Hudson and Richard Pintabona and his wife Marilyn of Acton. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Charlie spent his formative years in Newton and had resided in Wayland for over 40 years before he and Shirley retired to Mashpee in 2004. He graduated from Our Lady’s High School in Newton. He began his career as a machinist with the Howard Clock Products in Waltham where he met his wife Shirley. He served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict with the United States Army as a Private First Class. For over 45 years he was the Master Switchman CO Tech for the New England Telephone Company in Wayland retiring in 1996.
Charlie was an avid golfer and also enjoyed swimming each day at the South Cape Beach in Mashpee. His family was the center of his life and delighted in time spent with them especially all of his grandchildren. They spent many happy vacations on the Cape and in Chappaquiddick. Charlie loved being on the Cape and took great pride in caring for his yard as well as projects around the home. Upon his retirement he was associated with the Wayland Country Club which he loved before moving to Mashpee. He will be greatly missed by all of the lives that he touched during his lifetime.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Ann’s Church, 124 Cochituate Road (Rte 27), Wayland.
Interment will follow in the Akins family lot in North Cemetery in Wayland.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial gifts in Charlie’s memory may be sent to Boston Children's Hospital Trust, 401 Park Drive, Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215.
