Obituary

Ray L. Greene “Wounded Eagle”, 65, of Canterbury, died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 13, 2014. He was born May 23, 1949 in Ledyard, the son of the late George F. Greene Jr. and the late Sadie Avis Wilcox Greene. Ray was a graduate of Ledyard High School class of 1968. He proudly served two tours in Vietnam with the Fourth Infantry and the 101st Airborne. He married his high school sweetheart Joan M. Mazzella also of Ledyard, on July 1, 1970.

Ray worked at Electric Boat in Groton as a welder and welding instructor for 30 years. His passions throughout his life included restoring antique cars, hunting, and raising beef cattle on his farm. More recently, Ray could be seen at his favorite spots around town, Cumberland Farms and Dino’s.

In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by his children, Nathaniel W. Greene, Angela L. Greene-Crippin, and Matthew F. Greene; his grandson, Brian V. Greene; four brothers, George Greene III, Noyes Greene, Thomas Greene, and Robert Greene; and three sisters, Sadie Lewis, Cindy Wright, and Ginger Wright.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 17 from 6p.m. to 8p.m. with remarks at 7:45p.m. at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Burial with military honors will be on Saturday, December 20 at 11a.m. at the Peckham/Brown Cemetery, Iron Street, Ledyard. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Ray’s memory to AMVETS Post CT45 or The Salvation Army.
