Doris Thompson Downing, 96, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Monday, December 21, 2014, at the Church of the Nazarene in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Barry Stephens and the Rev. David Ash officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. Downing was born September 21, 1918, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Daniel & Rena Campbell Thompson. She was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School and was awarded the title of “Miss Fitzgerald”. She managed The Darling Shop for many years as well as worked in the family business. She was also a homemaker. She was a longtime faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her children: Wayne & Brenda Downing of Fitzgerald and Peggy Downing of Tifton; two step-grandchildren: David & Breana King of Fitzgerald and Donna Karen & Al Hatcher of Atlanta; five great-grandchildren; a brother: Gerald & Janet Thompson and a sister: Vivian Griffin, all of Fitzgerald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: E.Q. Downing, Jr. and siblings: LaVerne McGuire, Wylene Prescott, Wallace Thompson, and Everett Thompson.
