Obituary

Susanne Hulbert Bowen

Augusta, GA-Miss Susanne Hulbert Bowen passed away at Trinity Hospital, Augusta, GA on Monday, December 15, 2014 following a short illness. She was born on October 26, 1912 and was a life-long resident of Augusta. She was the daughter of Guy Musgrove Bowen and Nannie Eliza Hulbert. She graduated from Tubman High School in 1931 and attended Queens College in Charlotte, NC where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. She worked at Hollingsworth Candy Company as the company’s bookkeeper and retired after 35 years of service.

Susanne had a large circle of friends and traveled widely on tours and to attend meetings. Some of her travels took her to Europe and the World’s Fairs in Chicago and New York. She supported many organizations in the community, and always had a great love of history. Through her incredible memory, she was a primary source of information about Augusta and all of her family. She traced her family ancestors back to the early 1600’s at Jamestown and as far back as Charlemagne in Europe. One of her ancestors was naturalized in Augusta in 1802, and she enjoyed telling this story when she welcomed new citizens at the naturalization ceremonies at the Federal Court House.

In 1939, she was an organizing member and first Treasurer of the Augusta Chapter Junior Group of the Daughters of the American Revolution. As a member of the DAR for 75 years, she served in a number of offices of the Augusta Chapter. As a charter member of the Rev. Pierre Robert Chapter of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, she served as President and held many other offices. She was also Regent, Treasurer and Chaplain of the George Walton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists.

She was a member of many other lineage organizations including the Augusta Treaty Chapter of the Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars, First Georgia Company of The Jamestowne Society, National Society Sons and Daughters of the Colonial and Antebellum Bench and Bar, National Society Sons and Daughters of Antebellum Planters, National Society of Founders and Patriots, Georgia Division of the Magna Charta Dames, National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars, National Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor, National Society U.S. Daughters of 1812, National Society New England Women, Society of Descendants of Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter and United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Susanne was a loyal friend to many and was devoted to her large family of cousins including Nancy McElderry Parks (Lee), John W. (Bill) McElderry, Jr. (Margie), Hugh T. McElderry (Judy), Judge Dudley H. Bowen, Jr. (Madeline), Charles W. Bowen, III (Barbara) and George L. Bowen (Jane), Rosa Marie Overcash Owens (Charles) and their children and grandchildren.

A private family burial will be held on Wednesday, December 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with Dr. G. Daniel McCall officiating. A Memorial service will be held on December 29, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Charles Gregory Bowen officiating.
