Obituary

Acushnet - Maria Isabel Conceicao Garcia, age 90 of Dartmouth, passed away from a long illness on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at her daughter’s home in Acushnet. She was the widow of Silvino Garcia. Along with her six children, she came to this country in 1968. She, alongside her husband Silvino, owned and operated Mansil Bakery which specialized in Portuguese Cornbread that is still being produced today by other bakers. She loved to cook, bake and travel the country while enjoying its beauty. However, her passions were her family and religion. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren tremendously. Nothing gave her greater joy than the laughter of the little ones. She was a gifted storyteller and could recount events, names and places from the old country. She loved the company of people and everyone was welcomed in her home.
Maria was a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church.
She leaves behind a legacy in her family. She is survived by her children: Fernando Garcia and his wife, Alda, of New Bedford, Carlos Garcia of Dartmouth, Maria Fernanda Brasidio and her husband, Carlos of Acushnet, Connie Garcia, Teresa Garcia and Auzenda Garcia Brasidio all of New Bedford; 2 sisters: Auzenda Alberto and Fernanda Silva, both of New Bedford; 14 Grandchildren: Miguel, Linda, Bruce, Mark, Tracey, Kevin, Elvis, Brian, Peter, Erin, Barry, Eric, Ashlee and Amanda; 22 great grandchildren with on on the way and one great great grandson.
She was predeceased by 2 children: Maria daConceicao and Lionel Garcia, as well as 2 siblings: Edwin and Lionel.
The family of Mrs. Garcia would like to give a special thanks to the STAT Southcoast, Personal Touch Homecare Team, Coastline Elderly Services, Community Nurses of Fairhaven and the St. Luke's PCU floor nurses for the gentle care.
Her funeral will be Saturday beginning in the funeral home at 8:45 A.M. and continuing with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:45 A.M. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be in the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, Ma.
