Obituary

Smith, Henry J., of Boston, MA, 91, died Monday Nov. 24, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was born Aug. 31, 1923 in New York City and was raised in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of nurse Mary McCue Smith and accountant Henry Joseph Smith, Sr., and older brother of Marie Smith. Graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and admitted to Princeton University, where he studied at the School of Public and International Affairs before enlisting in the Army after World War II began.

He was sent to Fort Ritchie in Maryland, where he was trained in intelligence gathering. Then sent to the Pacific theater, where he participated in the American invasions of Papua/New Guinea and the Philippines; he was discharged honorably in 1946 with the rank of second lieutenant. He returned to Princeton after the war where he received his degree. During the Greek Civil War of 1947-1949 he served as an elections monitor for the U.N. in northern Greece.

Following this he began his career with Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, which became Mobil Oil. During his nearly 40-year-career he was stationed in Ghana, Nigeria, the Congo, Denmark and England, and traveled worldwide.

He wed Judith Adams in New York in 1953, and they were married for 61 years until his death. He loved history, travel, food and wine, reading and the Maine coast.

He is survived by Judith Adams Smith of Boston, daughter Abigail Smith Porter and son-in-law Jim Porter of Lewiston, ME: and daughter Nicola Smith, son-in-law Geoff Hansen and granddaughter Emma Hansen, of Tunbridge, VT.
