Nathan Andrew Schmitz

Augusta, GA – Nathan Andrew Schmitz, 17, surrounded by his family and friends, entered into the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday November 22, 2014 at Children’s Medical Hospital after a courageous six year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be conducted at Warren Baptist Church at 2:00 on Tuesday, November 25.

Nathan was a member of Warren Baptist and enjoyed participating in the Student Ministry. He volunteered to help with numerous activities that took place at the church. Nathan had a love for adventure and the outdoors. He was a member of Troop 7 Boy Scouts in North Augusta. He completed his Eagle Project in December of 2013 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in March of this year. He enjoyed science, winning his homeschool science fair, the CSRA Regional Science Fair and participating in the Intel International Science Fair in Pittsburg in 2011. Nathan particularly enjoyed deer hunting with his PaPa as often as he could. He was a member of the Columbia County 4H Skeet shooting team.

Nathan also enjoyed many sports, including soccer and baseball. He played Martinez-Evans Little League several years before his illness was diagnosed. After his treatments, one of his proudest moments was returning to the field for the Augusta Crusaders and catching his first competitive fly ball and getting his first hit.

Nathan participated in Social, Inc. and had a great love of dancing. Even through some of the toughest times of his illness he continued to dance. He was a member of the Dance Club and was chosen as a 2012-2013 Cotillion member with his partner Samantha Stewart.

Survivors include his parents, Leigh Ann (Martin) and Mark Schmitz, his brothers, Noah and Jacob, and his sister Chandler. Also surviving is his maternal grandfather Leonard Martin, uncles and aunts Terry and Abby Martin, Robert and Becky Martin, Philip and Kari Martin, Candace (Schmitz) and Terry Vincent and Scott and Amanda Schmitz. He is also survived by a large and loving group of great aunts, uncles and cousins. Nathan is proceeded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mildred Martin, and his paternal grandparents, John and Mary Lou Schmitz.
