COCHITUATE: Richard R. “Dick” Morris, 73, of Cochituate and Osterville a retired Captain/EMT of the Wayland Fire Department, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 21, 2014.
He was born in Framingham on March 2, 1941 the son of the late William J. Morris, Jr. and Florence V. (McMillen) Morris.
Dick leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Evelyn L. “Jeep” (Archer) Morris of Cochituate and Osterville. His four daughters and their husbands; Janet and Andy Holland of Framingham; Linda and Rob Averill of Framingham; Lori and Peter Fischelis of Concord and Lisa and Stephen Sarmento of Berwyn, PA. He was the grandfather of Erin Gibbons; Andrew and Kelsey Holland; Jillian, Robert and the late Brett Morris Averill; Lauren, Connor and Sydney Fischelis, Alexandra, Michael, Spencer and Riley Sarmento and his three great-granddaughters, Taylor, Brynn and Holly. Brother of William J. Morris, III of Cochituate and the late June (Morris) Anger. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Dick and Jeep have been lifelong residents of Cochituate and also resided in Osterville. He graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1960. While at Wayland High School Dick excelled in sports and was a stand out half-back for the football team. During his senior years he served as a co-captain. Recently, Dick was inducted into the Wayland High School Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments.
In June of 1965, he became a call firefighter for the Town of Wayland and in April of 1966 became a full time firefighter on the fire department. In May 1974 he was appointed an Acting Captain and in April of 1979 was promoted to Captain of the Wayland Fire department until his retirement in July of 2001 after 35 years as a dedicated servant to the town.
He also maintained the Morris Landscaping Company for many years beginning alongside his father. After his Dad’s passing, he continued to operate the business as it owner. The landscaping business is now a third generation company under the ownership of his son-in-law Andy Holland. Dick was an avid golfer and also took extreme pride in maintaining his “golf course lawn” at his Osterville home.
He was a dedicated family man to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grand-daughters who were the most important aspect of his life.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Cochituate.
His funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Community United Methodist Church, 5 Damon Street (Corner of Rte 27 and Damon St), Cochituate.
Interment will follow in the Morris family lot in Lakeview Cemetery, Cochituate.
In lieu of flowers, his family kindly suggests that memorial donations in Dick’s memory be sent to the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Memorial Contributions, POB 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
