Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of beloved father, and grandfather, Major Alfred H. Legere (USMC-Retired), on Monday, November 10th, 2014 at the Emeritus Assisted Care Facility in Camarillo, California at the age of 83. A lifelong resident of Berlin, New Hampshire, Alfred moved to California in 2008 following the death of his beloved wife of 53 years, Doris J. (Gagne) Legere. Born on June 4th, 1931 in Berlin, Alfred graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1950 where he met Doris.
Alfred is survived by his four children: Normand Legere of Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, Richard Legere of Camarillo, California, Colonel Paul Legere (USA-Retired) of Arlington, Virginia and Diane Legere-Jump of Oxnard, California as well as 5 grandchildren: Justin Legere of Camarillo, California, Nathan Legere of Nottingham, New Hampshire and Jennifer Legere of Northwood, New Hampshire, Leanna Legere of Camarillo, California and Zachary Bentley of Ventura, California. He is also survived by 4 sisters: Alice Roy of Gorham, NH, Maria Bergeron of Clayton DE, Irene Couture of Berlin, NH and Priscilla Vernon of Rochester, NH and 13 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Armand and Josephine (Lacroix) Legere.
The hallmark of Alfred’s life was his sense of service to his nation, his community and to his family. As a United States Marine, serving in the enlisted, warrant officer and commissioned officer ranks, he devoted 24 years of his life to the institution that he loved dearly, sending him to the wars in Korea and Vietnam and other duty locations around the world. He continued his tireless service to the community over the years as an NH Unemployment Counselor, Faculty member at the New Hampshire Vocational Technical College and a multitude of volunteer civic positions that included Police Commissioner, Water Board Member, City Councilman, Church Deacon and Marine Corps League member to name a few. Throughout a life of service to others, he and his wife Doris were the most proud of raising their four wonderful children, and cared deeply for their grandchildren, family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all who had the great fortune to know him.
Visitation will be Friday, November 21st, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Bryant Funeral Home Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Avenue in Berlin.
