Obituary


Worcester – David F. Johnson, 71, of Worcester, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, October 30th after a period of declining health.

David is survived by his fiancé, Claudia Guertin of Worcester; three daughters, April Johnson of Shrewsbury, Tanya Johnson of Worcester, Brenda Mason of Spencer; and three sons, Joseph Mullaney of Arizona, James Mullaney of Worcester and Eric Johnson of Worcester; a brother, Paul Johnson of Worcester; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Mr. Johnson was born in Worcester, son of the late Evald and Karin (Lund) Johnson. Dave earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University in Business Engineering and later earned a Masters Degree from Worcester State University.

Mr. Johnson worked at Main South Seafood located on Main Street from 1959 to 1996 and he became the owner of the business in 1979. Dave worked for the Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America from 1970 to 1973 during which he served as the District Scout Executive of North District and was also was the Assistant Camp Director of Treasure Valley Boy Scouts Reservation. Mr. Johnson later worked as the Director of the Quinsigamond Village Community Center for 11 years retiring in 2011 due to illness. During those years, Dave worked for the Southern Worcester County Rehabilitation Center and Matson Community Services.

Mr. Johnson was dedicated to the Worcester community and served on many local boards. He was a member of many organizations including the City Manager’s Advisory Neighborhood Cabinet, the Citizen’s Advisory Council for the City of Worcester, the South Worcester Neighborhood Development Corporation, the Oak Hill CDC Board, the Greenwood Street Medical Clinic Board at Bethlehem Covenant Church, and the Canal District Alliance. In addition, he was a past chairman of the Main South CDC, a long time board member of WCUW, and he also served as a past Deacon of the Quinsigamond Baptist Church and was active until recently with the Friends of the Worcester Senior Center.

In February of 2013 Mr. Johnson was recognized by the City of Worcester for the extraordinary efforts that he had made to make Worcester a better community for all to live in by awarding him the Caffrey Award.

He was recently named Big Bear by the WIIC. He will be best remembered by all who knew him by his smile, jovial attitude, kindness and generosity. David had a love for cars, camping and spending time at the beach.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 2nd from 4 to 7PM in the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. A memorial service will be held on Sunday November 9th at 4 PM in Bethlehem Covenant Church 46 Greenwood St. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dave’s honor to the American Cancer Society 30 Speen Street Framingham, MA 01701.
