Obituary

Rona Groman Mael passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 28th after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Melvin for over 62 years. Rona was the beloved first child of Jacob and Francis Groman. She was the loving sister of the late Esther Diane Kay and survived by her brother Phillip Groman. Rona graduated from the Choate School and then married raising four children. Craig and his wife Dorothy, Norman and his wife Lisa, Owen and their daughter, the late Jacqueline . She is survived by her grandchildren, Adrienne, David, Hannah and her husband Angelo, Alex, Zoe and Mary. She also leaves one great grandchild Lilli. Rona was an accomplished woman long before her time. After raising her children Rona went back to work as a home economics teacher in the Winthrop Public Schools for almost 20 years. During that time she educated hundreds of students many of whom began long and successful careers in the hospitality industry. At the same time she and her husband Melvin began a successful catering company hiring many of her students. After her years as a teacher she returned to school and finished her nursing degree started after high school. Upon graduation she began a new career as a nurse at the Don Orione Home where for almost 20 years she provided care and entertainment to staff, patients and their families. Along with her successful marriage and career Rona was a tireless worker for The Temple Tifereth Israel Sisterhood. Through her work she established the Sisterhood Catering Group. She was the Chairwoman of the Town of Winthrop Scholarship Committee. Services will be held at Temple Tifereth Israel, Thursday October 30 at 1:00pm with internment at the Temple’s Cemetery in Everett. Memorial Week will be held in the Temple following the service and then again Saturday evening and again on Sunday afternoon from 1-6pm. Memorial Week will then continue at her late residence. In lieu of flowers and food, donations can be made in her honor to Temple Tifereth Israel, 93 Veterans Road or Cohen Hillel Academy, 6 Community Road Marblehead MA.
