“Dick”

Martinez, GA – Entered into rest Monday, October 20, 2014 after a brave fight with cancer Burwell Carl “Dick” Lackey, 72, the much loved husband and partner of 30 years to Dianne McIntosh Lackey.

Mr. Lackey was born in November of 1941 in Raleigh, NC but spent most of his childhood in Rockingham, NC. He resided in the CSRA a total of 52 years some in Aiken County, SC then moved to Columbia County, GA in 1986. Mr. Lackey graduated from Grundy Center High School in Iowa, where he attended only the last semester of his senior year. He played football all 4 years of high school in Rockingham, NC as a “Rockingham Rocket”. Mr. Lackey later played football for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and for the Augusta Eagles. He played football nearly half of his life and was a superb and graceful athlete. Mr. Lackey had a life-long love of reading but most of all and liked to put others at ease. His family was most important to him Whether it was his patients or someone he just met or crossed paths with he always made certain he left everyone feeling good.

Mr. Lackey held a variety of jobs before becoming a Master Pipefitter at Continental Can Paper, where he worked for 17 years, then he fitted and sketched pipe for SRS for 10 years. At the age of 52 he returned to college to become a registered nurse. Mr. Lackey graduated from the University of South Carolina Aiken Campus. His ability to go back to college in his 50s inspired 7 other family members to return to college and become nurses. Mr. Lackey worked in the burn unit and the dialysis unit but finally found his calling in correctional nursing. He said that if not for the guidance of coaches and divine intervention, he could have easily been one of those inmates he was caring for in the prisons.

His beloved family members in addition to his wife include his daughters: Mary Catherine Velarde and Laura Ellen Loewen (J. Russell); son: Bryan Carl Lackey; step- daughter: Celita Collins (Billy); step-son: Gregory Pitts (Patricia), his sister: Eleanor Suttle (P.M.); 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will never forget his ever present smile, jokes and big heart. Mr. Lackey was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, brother: J. Paul Lackey; sister: Carol Byrum; half-sister: Mildred Deal; nephew: Joe Lackey and niece: Lynn Davenport.

A memorial service will be Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Bob Gosey officiating.
