Robert P. Curtis, Sr. age 87 of Canton passed away peacefully October 17th at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston surrounded by his loving family. Born in the family home on Sherman St. in Canton, he was raised in Canton and was a lifelong resident of the town. He was a graduate of Canton High School Class of 1944 and was a star quarterback playing on Charlie Stevenson’s first football squad. He is remembered for quarterbacking the team that upset a powerful Walpole High team led by Boston College bound Butch Songin. Six months after graduating he enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard. He completed a course at Radioman School before being assigned to the U. S. Coast Guard Cutter, Clover, for patrol duty off the coast of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. He was awarded the Honorable Discharge Button, WW II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He later went on to earn his associates degree in Fire Science from Massasoit and was a member of the Canton Fire Department for 50 years before retiring as a lieutenant. Lt. Curtis was his family's third generation of Canton firefighters. His grandfather Clinton and father William were both former fire chiefs. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #24 since 1933 and a volunteer for the Canton Food Pantry. Beloved husband for 52 years of Florence (Cardellicchio). Father of Caroline E. Curtis of Canton and Robert P. Curtis, Jr. and his wife Elaine of E. Falmouth. He is survived by his precious grandchildren Rachael E. and Robert P. Curtis, III. Brother in law of Gertrude Curtis of Millinocket, Maine, Mary Bates of Sudbury and Daniel Cardellicchio of Natick. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his older brothers William F Curtis, Jr. and Clinton M 'Bud' Curtis. Relatives and friends invited to attend a Funeral service at the Chapel at Knollwood Memorial Park Tuesday morning at 11. Visiting hours omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Ann Romney Center for Neurological Diseases c/o Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave 3rd Floor, Boston, MA 02116.
