Obituary

Attorney Daniel Patrick Kiley, Jr., formerly of Lawrence and Andover, MA, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 19, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Daniel P. Kiley, Jr. was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on March 8, 1924 and was joined six years later by his sister Barbara. His parents were Daniel P. Kiley, Sr. and Margaret F. (Monahan) Kiley. Daniel P. Kiley, Sr. was a police officer and served as Lawrence Police Chief. Daniel P. Kiley, Jr. attended St. Augustine's Grammar School and Lawrence High School graduating in 1941. Kiley attended St. John's Prep School of Danvers, and then went on to the University of New Hampshire and Boston College Law School. In 1943 Kiley joined the United States Army and served with the 78th Infantry Division in the European Theater. Kiley passed the Massachusetts Bar Exam in 1949 and practiced law in Lawrence for over 50 years. He served as an Assistant Attorney General in 1959 under Attorney General Edward McCormack, a position which he held until 1963.
In 1965 Kiley ran for mayoral office against incumbent John J. Buckley. He was successful, and began his term of office in 1966. During this time he became a member of the Executive Board of the Massachusetts League of Cities & Towns, as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. As mayor, he established the first planning department, increased the number of public housing units, was involved in building a new school and fire station and worked to stabilize the tax rate. Mayor Kiley decided not to run for a fourth term and ended his career as mayor at the end of 1971. He then returned to his law practice in Lawrence, and eventually moved to Andover, opening an office there with his son Attorney Thomas M. Kiley. He continued his private practice and obtained his last jury verdict just shy of his 80th birthday.
In 1943 he was married to Marcia Peterson of Peabody and had six children, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his sister Barbara Julie Maloney, his son Daniel Patrick III, and his daughter Hannah. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Marcia E. (Peterson) Kiley, and his children: Thomas and his wife Linda, daughter in-law Barbara Connelly-Kiley, Ellen Morrow and her husband Keith, Marcia LeMay and her husband Donald, Mark and his wife Monica, and Robert. He also leaves behind grandchildren: Colleen, Erin, Mark, April, Torrey, Jessica, Tom, Hilary, Bill, Lauren, Lindsey, and Dan, as well as 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Monday, September 22, 2014, from 4 to 8 PM. Interment will be in Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence.
