Obituary

Ventura

Verna Rose Kagan died on Saturday night September 6, 2014 with her husband, on, daughter, daughter-in-law and grandchildren at her bedside after a surprising diagnosis of cancer two months after her 80th birthday.

Verna was a loving and gifted wife, mother, grandmother, attorney, program manager of the Volunteer Lawyers Services Program, dog lover and bird watcher. She and her husband, Herman, were devoted parents to their daughter Batya and son Ken when Verna decided to attend law school when her kids were in their teens. After graduating law school in 1977 and passing the California Bar she opened a private practice specializing in Family Law. After retiring in 1994 she became active in the pro bono program of the Ventura County Bar Association, which finds attorneys for indigent and low income residents, and became its Program Manager more than a decade ago. She had a heart of gold, cared about and always wanted to help others. The program she managed was recognized as outstanding by the California Bar Association and Verna was especially honored by the Women Lawyers Association of Ventura County.

She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Herman; her daughter Batya; her son Ken; her grandchildren Jacob and Sarah, her daughter-in-law Lupe and Lupe's Family whom she loved dearly. Verna was especially fond of tent camping in national forests with her husband and children and was a passionate bird watcher. She pursued this avocation for over 40 years and was prepared to continue until she came down with cancer.

A special thanks to the Physicians and Nursing staff of Community Memorial Hospital who helped her through her pain and suffering when she was stricken with a surprising cancer disorder.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5PM TUesday September 16, 2014 at Temple Beth Torah, 7620 Foothill Road, Ventura with Rabbi Lisa Hochberg Miller officiating. Following the services a reception will be held at the Temple. 647-4181

To honor Verna's memory donations can be made to the Volunteer Lawyers Service Program (VLSP) of the Ventura County Bar Association, 650-7599
