Obituary


Gloria M. Cormier, 78, of North Smithfield, Rhode Island passed away Friday August 29 2014 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
The daughter of Victor J. Canzano and Helen A. (Jaworski)Canzano, Gloria was born in Woonsocket, RI and attended Woonsocket public schools, graduating from Woonsocket High School in 1953. After attending the University of Rhode Island, she enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954. She completed her basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and was later stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, IL as a personnel specialist.
Upon her honorable discharge from the US Air Force, Gloria worked for the State of Rhode Island in the Department of Employment Security and for Rhode Island Blue Cross. After taking a hiatus in her career to marry and have her children, Gloria worked as a personnel administrator for Amperex Electronics in both Slatersville and Smithfield, RI. She also worked as a clerk for D&N Transportation in Slatersville, RI.
Gloria loved all animals, both wild and domestic, gardening, nature and the environment. An avid reader, she also enjoyed television crime dramas and the music of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kinky Friedman, John Lennon and Bob Marley. She cherished the service and friendship she received from the healthcare providers and staff of the Providence and West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Centers. Above all, Gloria loved and lived for the companionship and love of her family and canine friends.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Richard Cormier of North Smithfield, RI and her daughters Shelly LeBlanc of Slatersville, RI and Gayle Cormier of North Smithfield, RI.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Barkley Fund, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, 200 Westboro Road, North Grafton, MA 01536-1895 (vet.tufts.edu/giving/opportunities).
