Harold F. “Mike” Mowry, age 91, a lifelong resident of Norton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Hope T. (Barlow) Mowry who died on March 23, 1993.
Born in Providence, RI on February 23, 1923, he was a loving son of the late Harold D. and Frances (McCarthy) Mowry. He grew up and was educated in Norton. During WWII, Mike proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Mobile and on December 25, 1945 was honorably discharged from duty with the rank of Seaman, First Class.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Mowry had been employed for several years at Low-Temp in Norton. When younger, he had worked at the Defiance Bleachery and the Talbot Woolen Mills, both former landmark industries in Norton
Mike was a talented woodworker and an accomplished musician and singer. For many years, he performed in many local establishments under the name of “The Mike Mowry Trio”, and while in the Navy, played his drums aboard ship.
He was a former member of the Norton VFW and had enjoyed traveling with his late wife Hope. Above all, Mike treasured the times spent in the presence of his children and grandchildren
He is survived by his devoted children; Diane E. Boudria of Fall River, Matthew D. Mowry and his wife Shelley of Norton, Kenneth D. Mowry and his wife Sharon of Attleboro, Frances E. Pacheco and her husband Wayne of Fall River and the late Michael F. Mowry. He is also survived by his adoring 12 grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Herbert Mowry and Margaret Hartington, and the father-in-law of the late Benjamin Boudria and Laurel Mowry.
His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday, August 30th at 11:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton.
Visiting hour will be held on Friday, August 29th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Mike’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 150 Cambridge Park Drive, Suite 202, Cambridge, MA 02140.
