Obituary

HAVERHILL: George Perry Hicks, 91, died on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Maplewood Care and Rehabilitation Center in Amesbury.
Born in Haverhill on September 22, 1922, he was the son of the late George M. and Elizabeth (Burnham) Hicks. George was educated in the Haverhill school system and then went on to serve in the U.S. Army upon graduation. He served in Northern France and the battle of Normandy during World War II. He was a medic while deployed, treating and caring for injured soldiers. He was honorably discharged in April 1946 and returned to his hometown of Haverhill and worked in the shoe factories as well as odd jobs.
George loved boxing, horse racing, chocolate candy bars and telling jokes. He will be remembered for his feisty, jokester behavior, especially with the staff of Maplewood.
He is survived by his nephew, John P. Maynard of Amesbury and his former spouse, Lynn Maynard of Haverhill; his great-nieces, Stacy Maynard of East Kinston, NH and Kelly Maynard of Amesbury. He is also survived by his niece, Betty Durant and his nephew, William Durant both of Haverhill. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Alceanna, Lorne “Earl”, Walter, Grace, Fred, John and Alice.
His funeral service with military honors will be privately held in Highland Cemetery, Newton, NH at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours.
