Obituary

Frances Margaret (Granger) Bernard died August 17, 2014 at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. Frances was born September 30, 1920 in Franklin, Vermont and was the youngest of 8 children of Alma (Bouchard) and Elphege Granger. She is predeceased by sisters Cecile Johnson, Juliette Cota, Gervaise Masseau and Germaine Bessette and by brothers Gerard, Adrien and George Granger. She is survived by three children all of Massachusetts: Irene Brouillard of Buzzards Bay, Edward Brouillard of West Bridgewater and Louise Hardiman and her husband James of Brockton, and several nieces and nephews.

Frances worked as a Secretary at the Brockton VA Hospital for over 20 years in the long-term care building. After retirement, she worked as a nanny and volunteered at the Cardinal Cushing hospital.

In 1994, Frances reconnected with Alfred (Bonhomme) Bernard, a boyfriend from pre-WWII who had been widowed; they married on December 16, 1994. Moving back to Vermont, she found many years of companionship and happiness with Al until his passing in February 2008. At that time, she returned to Massachusetts where she lived at Emmanuel House Residence in Brockton and then at the Vineyard at Life Care Center in W. Bridgewater for the last months of her life. Her family wishes to extend their gratitude and hugs to the staff of both places for their genuine loving care and appreciation of Frances.

She loved dancing, music, knitting, playing cards, bingo, flowers and good food. She was a good cook and enjoyed making wool braided rugs and quilts. Anyone who knew Fran knows she was strong, independent, and strong-willed. She was hard working, responsible and always did whatever needed to be done. Most of all, she loved to have fun and to laugh. She always had a quick comeback.

It is her strength, her sense of responsibility, and her sense of humor that will be remembered most.

Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton on Sunday, September 7th 5:30 – 7:30 pm with a funeral service at 7:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Activities Fund at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater 765 W. Center St. W. Bridgewater, MA 02379 or to Old Colony Hospice, One Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
