Obituary

Serke, Gary Michael, 61, of Louisville, died August 12, 2014 of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eileen M (Valgus) Serke; daughter, Laura A. Serke; son, Daniel J. Serke (Devin); sister, Joanne Johnson; brother, John 'Jack' Serke (Barbara); nieces, nephews and many loving friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Serke and Ann (Wytias) Serke from Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Allderdice High School, Class of 1970 and received a degree in civil engineering from Penn State University in 1974. He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in 2008 after working for them in Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, San Antonio, TX, Fort Knox, KY and the Louisville District. Gary pursued hobbies in woodworking, fencing and Irish music. He enjoyed a lifetime of outdoor activities including camping, hunting, fishing, muzzle loading, and cave exploring. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Frazier History Museum and was a loving husband and father. Gary was a Catholic and attended Valley View Church with his wife. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with burial to follow in St. Andrews Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frazier History Museum in Gary's memory.
