Laconia-----Atty. Paul Leo Normandin, 83, of Laconia died on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at his summer camp on Lake Winnisquam.
Paul was born January 13, 1931 in Laconia, N.H., the son of the late Fortunat E. and Susie J. (Seymour) Normandin. He graduated from Tilton School, the University of New Hampshire, and from Boston University Law School. Paul enlisted in the New Hampshire National Guard as a private, became a State Judge Advocate, and retired at the rank of Captain.
Paul was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1955. After serving as Assistant U. S. Attorney, he joined his father, Atty. F. E. Normandin, and his cousins at the Normandin, Cheney & O’Neil law firm. Over the course of his fifty years as a N.H. Bar Association member, he had an active trial law and probate practice. He retired as the Senior Partner of NCO and was an honorary inactive member of the New Hampshire Bar at the time of his death.
Paul was an Elected Delegate for John F. Kennedy at the Democratic National Convention in 1960. He was appointed by President Kennedy as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire and served from 1961-1965. He was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives for two terms, was a former member of the Laconia City Council and served as a member and Chairman of the Laconia Fire Commission.
Paul was a Corporator and Trustee of the Laconia Savings Bank and served seventeen years as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the time of his death, he was a Senior Director of Bank of New Hampshire and an Honorary Trustee of LSB Financial.
Paul was a former Director of the Citizen Publishing Company, past Chairman of the Gunstock Area Commission, former Trustee of the Lakes Region General Hospital, past President of the Lakes Region Family Services, past member of the Taylor Community Board of Directors, and past President of the Lakes Region Scholarship Fund. He was co-founder and former Trustee of the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm located in Tamworth, N.H. and a past President of the Laconia Historical & Museum Society.
Paul was involved in many service organizations including the Citizen Santa Fund Trust, the Knights of Columbus, and served over 35 years with the Laconia Kiwanis Club. In 1992, he was the recipient of the Jim Irwin Community Recognition Service Award. Paul was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, past President of St. Joseph’s Parish Council and a founding member of the Holy Trinity Endowment Trust Fund Board. Paul enjoyed running, skiing, boating, reading and was well known for his practical jokes.
Paul is survived by his wife of 22 years, Linda (Drake) Normandin, of Laconia; his son, Frank E. Normandin, and his wife, Kris, of Wayland MA; three daughters, Judith A. Normandin and her husband, Robert Bernardin of North Andover MA, Susan J. Godbout and her husband, Norman, of Gilford NH and Jean E. Masterson and her husband Brian of Norfolk VA; seven grandchildren, Andrew Bernardin, Kim Bernardin, Blake Normandin, Kate Normandin, Joseph Masterson, Benjamin Masterson and Annie Masterson; a sister-in-law, Helen “Pat” Normandin; two nieces and one nephew. In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his first wife, Ann (Dunleavy) Normandin, his brother, Robert Normandin, and his sister, Margaret E. Normandin.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2014 from 4:00PM-7:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N.H.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 10:00AM at St. Andre Bessette Parish at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, N.H. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. John’s Cemetery, Tilton, N.H.
